Dumbo (Big Ear) HMPK Female Betta
Dumbo (Big Ear) HMPK Female Betta
Overview:
The Dumbo (Big Ear) HMPK Female Betta (Betta splendens) is a beautiful short-finned plakat variety distinguished by her oversized pectoral fins, often called “elephant ears.” While slightly more streamlined than males, females still display the dramatic Dumbo fin trait along with vibrant coloration and elegant movement.
Graceful yet active, Dumbo HMPK females are excellent display fish and can even be kept in carefully structured female groups (sororities) under proper conditions.
Common Name: Dumbo (Big Ear) HMPK Female Betta
Scientific Name: Betta splendens
Origin:
Selectively bred in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam) to enhance the halfmoon plakat body type and signature oversized pectoral fins.
Maximum Size:
2–2.5 inches (5–6.5 cm)
Dumbo HMPK Female Betta Care:
Tank Parameters Required:
Minimum Tank Size: 5 gallons (19 liters) per fish (10+ gallons recommended for sororities)
pH Range: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: 3–15 dGH
Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
Temperament:
Active, curious, and generally less aggressive than males. Females can be kept singly or in sororities (groups of 4–6 or more) in larger, heavily planted aquariums with careful monitoring. Individual personalities vary — some may still show territorial behavior.
Tank Level:
Mid-to-top swimmer but explores all tank levels.
Diet:
Carnivorous. Feed high-quality betta pellets as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Provide small, controlled portions once or twice daily.
Tank Decor:
Use live or silk plants to create visual barriers and reduce stress
Add caves, driftwood, or leaf hammocks for resting spots
Keep easy surface access for air breathing via the labyrinth organ
Avoid sharp decorations that could damage fins
Breeding:
Bubble-nest species. When breeding, introduce the female to a conditioned male in a separate breeding setup (5–10 gallons, warm water ~28°C/82°F, floating plants, gentle filtration). The male builds and guards the bubble nest. Remove the female after spawning to prevent aggression.
Behavior:
Interactive and intelligent. Dumbo females are active swimmers and often approach the glass when they see movement. They may flare lightly during minor disputes but are typically more social than males when housed correctly.
Suitable Tank Mates:
Peaceful bottom dwellers (corydoras, kuhli loaches)
Small, calm schooling fish (rasboras)
Other female bettas in a properly managed sorority
Avoid fin-nippers or aggressive species.
Maintenance:
Perform 20–25% weekly water changes
Maintain stable warm temperatures with a heater
Use gentle filtration to avoid strong currents
Difficulty:
Easy–Moderate. Hardy when kept in stable, warm water with proper tank setup and tankmate selection.
